Writing Affirmations for Empowerment

A Technique for Transformation

By Jeanie Marshall

__________

"Human beings,
by changing the inner attitudes of their minds,
can change the outer aspects of their lives."

— William James

Writing on a Pad of Paper

Affirmations are powerful. Thoughts, spoken words, and written statements are acts of creation. It is important that our words be in alignment with our desires. In order to live the life we want, we must affirm what we want, not what we do not want.

To Write or Not to Write Affirmations

When we write something or read what someone else has written, we tend to give it more credence than the spoken word. As Thomas Aquinas said, "It is written... therefore it is." While certainly we can point to many exceptions to this tendency, the exceptions do not negate the tendency.

Make Affirmations Resonate With You

Simply saying or reading or even writing affirmations without feelings will do little to promote change. Thoughts evoke feelings and then those feelings power additional thoughts. Without feelings, we might just as well be a log in the woods.

In working with both verbal and written affirmations, I have monitored their impact on a variety of persons. Some individuals have come to me after working for a long time, perhaps even diligently, with affirmations that have stimulated no change at all because there was no resonance -- nice words, but no connection.

Each person has a resonance or vibration or frequency; each affirmation has a resonance or vibration or frequency. So, too, a desire to change resonates. Affirmations that are in proper resonance with the person thinking or saying or writing them can positively impact the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects and other invisible layers in the energy field.

Use Both Hands

When we write something with a pen or pencil, we instinctively perform this task with our dominant hand. But what happens when we put the writing instrument in the other hand? I have discovered incredible information by recommending that persons do just that. Clients, workshop participants, and television viewers have faithfully written affirmations with both their dominant and non-dominant hands. The results have been astounding!

Changes are fast and deep, especially when combined with other appropriate strategies and techniques. Such results do not surprise me in view of the findings of whole-brain studies. In addition, I know that all changes are speeding up at this time in our history, so attributing success solely to a technique, even a powerful one, is unrealistic and naive.

Cells shift and change and die and move all the time. To find ways to direct the changes is exciting and empowering. I have found that writing appropriate affirmations with the non-dominant hand can de-emphasize issues or patterns that began in childhood or even prenatally. If we do the same things the sae way, we will get the same result. Sometimes we just need to approach situations differently, with a new perspective.

Affirmation Writing Set

A "set" of affirmations is the number and method of writing. An example of a set is: 9-3-9, which means that an affirmation is written nine times with the dominant hand, three times with the non-dominant hand, and nine more times with the dominant hand.

A set can be any number or set of numbers that resonates with the person writing. The number 3 is powerful for creation, so I typically use multiples of 3 when working in groups or talking generally about the approach. Other popular sets are 7-3-1, 8-4-8, 5-5-5.

For some individuals, this process stimulates a deep release that is similar to a detoxification experience. If this happens for you, simply relax and allow the clearing to take place as effortlessly as possible. You may find that you want to increase or decrease the number of sets to achieve a particular result.

Releasing/Cleansing Affirmations

Releasing/Cleansing Affirmations are particularly enhanced by writing them in sets with both hands as described above. Releasing/Cleansing Affirmations appear in the first week of each month in the book Affirmations: A Pathway to Transformation and the DailyAffirm Blog. For examples of Releasing/Cleansing Affirmations and the other four types of affirmations used in this process, see the article Five Types of Affirmations for Empowerment.
